When I saw the second line on my pregnancy test, I knew immediately what I wanted.
I wasn't confused. I wasn't undecided. I didn't need weeks to make my decision.
I wanted an abortion.
Because I was only 4½ weeks pregnant, I decided to document my experience. I wanted to show what a very early medical abortion with pills actually looked like, from the positive pregnancy test to the negative one two weeks later.
Everyone's experience is different. This is simply mine.
At just 4.5 weeks pregnant, the pregnancy line was still faint.
Very early pregnancies can feel surreal. There are often very few symptoms, and it can be hard to believe you're actually pregnant.
Once I knew, I gave myself space to pause and reflect before moving forward.
One of the biggest advantages of a self-managed abortion is that you can prepare in whatever way feels right for you.
For me, that meant creating a calm, intentional space.
I lit candles, spent time in prayer and reflection, and visited the river to meditate. I spoke to my body, acknowledged the pregnancy, and permitted myself to move forward with peace.
Whether your preparation is practical, emotional, spiritual, or none of the above, the important thing is that it belongs to you.
I swallowed one 200 mg tablet of mifepristone.
Mifepristone works by blocking progesterone, the hormone that supports a pregnancy.
Most people don't notice many physical changes after taking it.
I didn't.
Although many people take misoprostol after 24 hours, I chose to wait 48 hours.
I wanted to give the medication additional time to work while also giving myself time to prepare for the next step.
Over those two days, I organized my supplies, rested, stayed hydrated, and made my home comfortable for the experience ahead.
I never felt rushed.
Before beginning, I made sure I had enough medication available.
I hoped one dose would be enough, but I also had additional misoprostol in case I needed it.
Having everything prepared beforehand allowed me to focus on my body instead of worrying about finding more medication later.
When I was ready, I placed four 200 mcg misoprostol tablets under my tongue and allowed them to dissolve for 30 minutes before swallowing what remained.
Because my pregnancy was very early, I chose the sublingual route.
Within a few hours, the process began.
Around three hours after taking misoprostol, I started bleeding.
The bleeding was heavier than my normal period and included clots, which is expected during a medication abortion.
Over the next few days, the bleeding gradually became lighter.
For me, one dose of misoprostol was enough to complete the abortion.
Two weeks after my abortion, I took another pregnancy test.
The second line had disappeared.
Seeing that negative result brought a sense of closure. My body had completed the process exactly as it was designed to.
People often ask me what surprised me most.
It wasn't the bleeding.
It wasn't the medication.
It was how peaceful the experience felt.
Having my abortion at home meant I could move at my own pace, create an environment that felt safe, and remain connected to my body throughout the process.
That sense of agency changed everything.
Finding out you're pregnant can bring many emotions, but you don't have to navigate them alone.
A very early abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol is a safe and highly effective option for many people. With accurate information, quality medication, and compassionate support, many people find that having an abortion at home allows them to experience the process with greater privacy, comfort, and control.
At Umoya, we believe abortion care is about more than medication.
